About
Tragedia lirica in a prologue and two acts (1845)
Libretto by Salvadore Cammarano
based on Voltaire's Alzire, ou les Américains
For the 2027 Season, Fondazione Arena is exploring new horizons: in March, Verdi’s rarest and least-known opera, Alzira, will be staged in Verona for the first time.
Based on Voltaire’s tragedy of the same name, Alzira recounts the clash between the Incas and the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, placing its heroine at the heart of a possible, yet fragile, peace.
An opera by the young Verdi to be rediscovered, rich in experimentation, themes and solutions that would emerge more fully in his later masterpieces – the very production that opened the 2026 Verdi Festival.
IN-DEPTH TALK open to the public with Roberto Mori, on Thursday 11 March at 6 pm, in the Sala Veranda at the Accademia Filarmonica di Verona.
