About

For the first time, the Arena orchestra is tackling Das Lied von der Erde, Gustav Mahler’s spiritual testament, his true ‘Ninth’ symphony, left in a drawer for years and not numbered as a symphony, partly because of its unusual form and partly, perhaps, to evade fate.

Six songs, drawn from a collection of ancient Chinese poems, tell the story of humanity and life in their entirety – the seasons, beauty, death and farewell. An intensity never matched before or since, in a rare and moving masterpiece conducted by Wolfram Christ, the former legendary principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic and now a much sought-after conductor.
