The opening of the Opera and Ballet Season is dedicated to the genius from Salzburg, to mark the Mozart a Verona 2027 Festival. In this 1782 opera, set against a backdrop of misunderstandings, love affairs and dangers, Mozart depicts a fantastical Orient that is as comical as it is ruthless. As befits a Singspiel, musical numbers alternate with spoken passages, requiring skilled actors and virtuoso singers, accompanied by an orchestra playing exotic ‘Turkish-style’ music that were all the rage in the 18th century.

This is the opera’s first ever appearance on the Verona stage and this is one of several firsts: this production is the legendary creation by Giorgio Strehler and comes from Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
