«Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate» (Fly, my thoughts, on wings of gold) will be heard again among the thousand-year-old stones of the Arena, in a new production of Giuseppe Verdi's first masterpiece by Stefano Poda opening the 102 Arena di Verona Opera Festival with a double date.
‘Two opposites attract and repel each other throughout the stage, until they reach a point of maximum repulsion and splitting, and then arrive at the synthesis of the Finale in which the two opposites are brought together again. The metaphor is that of the bonds between atomic particles: matter originates from their union, but Humanity has discovered how to separate them, causing total destruction. Technological progress makes everything possible - and Nabucco does not hesitate to use his material superiority against the defeated, even to the point of dramatic consequences: the lesson of this masterpiece is that rationality, to be well intentioned, cannot disregard spirituality.’ Stefano Poda
