Gabriele Sagona

Born in Bergamo, Gabriele Sagona began studying singing with his father and later refined his vocal technique with Biancamaria Casoni. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Abbado, Armiliato, Arrivabeni, Battistoni, Bernàcer, Carminati, Chailly, Domingo, Ettinger, Gatti, Gelmetti, Luisi, Mehta, Noseda, Oren, Palumbo, Renzetti, Santi, Steinberg, Wellber and Zanetti, as well as stage directors such as Abbado, Bellotto, Carsen, Dante, Dodin, Esposito, Grinda, Hermanis, Mariani, Michieletto, Poda, Puggelli, Ronconi and Stinchelli.

He has performed at Italy's leading opera houses (Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Bellini in Catania, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Teatro Regio di Parma, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Taormina, Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, Teatro Regio di Turin and Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa) and internationally (Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Tel Aviv, the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Royal Opera House Muscat, Opera de Tenerife, Opéra de Limoges, Carnegie Hall in New York and the Astana Opera) in a broad repertoire that includes Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Don Basilio), Il Turco in Italia (Selim), La Cenerentola (Alidoro) and L'italiana in Algeri (Mustafà); Le Nozze di Figaro (Count Almaviva and Figaro) and Don Giovanni (Leporello); Lucia di Lammermoor (Raimondo); La Bohème (Colline); Il Trovatore (Ferrando), I Masnadieri (Moser), Luisa Miller (Wurm) and Macbeth (Banco).

Among his recent engagements are Aida (The King) at the Baths of Caracalla, Rigoletto (Monterone) in Taormina conducted by Domingo and in Naples, I Vespri siciliani in Palermo, Bologna and Naples; La Cenerentola in Tokyo and Genoa; Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila (Abimelech) in Naples; Le Nozze di Figaro in Catania; Puccini roles in Tosca (Angelotti) in Palermo and Tel Aviv conducted by Mehta; La Bohème in Tel Aviv and Genoa; and Turandot (Timur) in Trieste.

He made his debut at Verona's Teatro Filarmonico in 2018 as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro. He returned in 2023 as Johann in Massenet's Werther. During the 2024 Opera and Ballet Season, he took part in Verona's first performances of Il Campiello (Anzoleto) and Stiffelio (Jorg), and appeared as Alidoro in La Cenerentola.

He made his Arena di Verona debut in 2022 as Zuniga in Carmen and took part in the Domingo in Verdi Opera Night gala. The following year, during the 100th Festival, he appeared in Carmen and the Juan Diego Flórez Gala, performing Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata and Uncle Bonzo in Madama Butterfly; in 2024, he returned to the Arena as Zuniga in Carmen and Angelotti in Tosca.

For the 102nd Arena di Verona Opera Festival, he returned as Zuniga in Carmen; performed the roles of Baron Douphol and Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata; and made his role debut as the High Priest of Belo in Nabucco, in Stefano Poda's new production.
