Gianfranco Montresor

Born in Verona, he performed from the very beginning in leading theatres such as the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Wexford Festival, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, São Carlos in Lisbon, Macerata Opera Festival, Teatro Regio in Parma, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Opera di Roma, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, and the Staatsoper in Berlin. He sings under the baton of prestigious conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Daniel Oren, John Gardiner, Plácido Domingo, Fabio Luisi, and Daniele Gatti. He began his collaboration with La Scala for Teneke, a new opera by Fabio Vacchi (2007), followed by Prokofiev's The Gambler conducted by Barenboim (2008). In this opera, he made his debut at the Staatsoper Berlin (2008), the same year he also debuted on the stage of the Arena di Verona, where he was subsequently invited numerous times.

In 2012 he made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London in the role of Monterone, a role he reprised several times in various theatres, most notably the Liceu in Barcelona in 2017, the Arena di Verona in 2023, and the Teatro La Fenice in 2021 and 2025. After returning to the Teatro alla Scala in 2022 singing in Fedora, he began to tackle the basso cantabile repertoire, such as the monumental role of Silva in Ernani in Oviedo, the Prince of Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur, and Timur in Turandot in Catania.

He made his debut at the Arena di Verona in 1993 in La Traviata and returned in 2008 for Tosca, in 2009, 2012, 2014, in 2014 for Turandot and in 2016 for Carmen. In 2020 he took part in the "Nel cuore della musica" Festival. He returns to the Arena di Verona for the 2026 Opera Festival in the role of Alcindoro in La Bohème.
