David Parsons

Choreographer

David Parsons was born in Illinois and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. From 1978 to 1987, he was one of the principal male dancers of the company of Paul Taylor, who created special roles for him in such celebrated works of choreography as “Arden Court”, “Last Look” and “Roses”.

In 1987, he left Paul Taylor and founded the “David Parsons Dance Company”, together with the lighting director Howell Binkley. As its artistic director, David Parsons created more than 60 choreographic works, at least twenty of which were commissioned by important organizations such as the Jacob Pillow Dance Festival, the Spoleto Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada, the Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam, Holland and the American Dance Festival. Many of these works have been broadcast on television as part of many different programmes: for example, his appearances on American television in Caught, his most famous piece of choreography, during the programme Alive from Off Centre. For a good eight seasons, David Parsons has directed a festival of dance in Fort Myers in Florida, where dance professionals come from all over the United States to teach students at all levels. In 1999, he was awarded the National Artist Award by the University of Tucson in Arizona for his outstanding work with the young. He also received the Dance Magazine’s prize for the year 2000. In 2001, he was director and choreographer of AERS, a production that went on tour in the United States for the first six months of 2001, winning the American Prize of Choreography the same year.

In the summer of 2007 at the Arena, he will be responsible for the choreography in the opera Aida.
