Pier Giorgio Morandi studied composition at the “G. Verdi” Conservatoire in Milan and orchestral direction at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Ferdinand Leitner. During his time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan he was the assistant to Riccardo Muti and then Giuseppe Patanè.
In 1987 he studied in the United States under Leonard Bernstein and Seji Ozawa, and in the same year he won the “Tanglewood” competition. He was appointed Assistant Director at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome in 1989, where he directed Ernani, Madame Butterfly and also conducted many other symphony concerts. In 1990 he recorded his first record, Don Quichotte by Paisiello with the Teatro dell’Opera of Rome.
Since then, his career has developed into the main opera houses worldwide. The knowledge of the repertoire and of opera traditions, above all those of Italy, has made him one of the conductors that critics and public mostly love. He is the Main Conductor at the Stockholm Opera House and Guest Conductor at the Goteborg Opera House.
His symphonic activity has developed with worldwide famous and important orchestras, including the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome, the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Flemish Royal Orchestra, and the Flemish Radio Orchestra.
He has recorded for leading record companies like "Naxos" "Hungaroton" and "Nuova Era.” Performances include L’Elisir d’Amore, Rossini Arias with Ewa Podles, Verdi Overtures, Messa di Gloria by Puccini, Don Chisciotte by Paisiello, Stabat Mater by Rossini, Le Nozze di Figaro, Concertos for Oboe by Vivaldi, Concertos for Double-bass by Bottesini, Messa di Requiem and Four Sacred Pieces by Verdi.
In 2004 he conducted Norma at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona and Il Trovatore at the Arena di Verona, La Forza del Destino in Gothenburg, I Masnadieri (concerts) at the Teatro La Monnaie in Brussels, Mefistofele at the Frankfurt Opera.
He has recently recorded L’Assassinio nella Cattedrale by I.Pizzetti, with Ruggero Raimondi, with “Unitel” and “Decca”.
In 2008/09 season, Mr Morandi conducted Edgar at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, Norma in Frankfurt, Tosca in Berlin, La Bohème in Goteborg. About his future engagements: La Traviata and Norma in Frankfurt, Turandot in Budapest, Aida in Seoul, Elisir d’Amore, Tosca, Nabucco and La Sonnambula at the Staatsoper in Wien, Nabucco in Copenhagen, Manon Lescaut and Tosca at Las Palmas and, at the Arena in Verona, Tosca and Gala Placido Domingo.
As ever, he will continue to work closely with leading opera houses in Scandinavia with productions such as Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Andrea Chenier, Macbeth, Falstaff, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Elektra.
