Saverio Marconi

Saverio Marconi was born in Rome in 1948 and he can be considered as a datum point for music in Italy. His career has been constantly developing through many experiences: cinema, theatre, radio and TV acting as well as drama teaching. He went on to to be successful with many important projects as a movie Director.

He trained in Toscana where he first attended the drama school of Dory Cei in Florence, and then the "Teatro Studio del Metastasio" in Prato, where Paolo Emilio Poesio and Paolo Magelli were teaching. In 1970 he got his first engagement in a theatrical company directed by the fathers of the Italian musical comedy, Garinei and Giovannini.

He presently works as a theatrical actor with the "Teatro Stabile di Torino", where he is directed by Franco Enriquez and Aldo Trionfo: these experiences will have a direct affect on the formation of his future career as a Director. In the Seventies, in the period of the theatrical co-operatives, he joined the G.S.T. co-operative of Gabriele Lavia, and later on the "Cigno" co-operative. After some experience in the world of cinema, Marconi met with Paolo and Vittorio Taviani: after a screen-test he got the part of Gavino in the movie "Padre Padrone" which was awarded first prize at the Festival of Cannes and he was awarded the "Nastro D'Argento" for best leading actor.

This movie represented the beginning of a lucky cinematographic career that led to Saverio Marconi being one of the main actors in the cult movies of the Seventies and Eighties; other great Directors such as Gillo Pontecorvo, Luigi Comencini and Pasquale Squitieri directed him as leading actor in several movies. Afterwards, while in television he performed some of the T.V. serials which were very successful in Italy, he also experiments with drama direction with a small group of actors in the Marche region: It was his first contact with Tolentino that led him to found the Drama School where he is still artistic director, the "Compagnia della Rancia". He is actor, director, author, producer and artistic director and his great determination since 1988 has made musicals his productive and artistic goal, leading Compagnia della Rancia to be one of the greatest theatrical companies in Italy.

Since 1988 he has signed the direction of several musicals such as: "Little Shop of Horrors", "A Chorus Line", "La Cage aux Folles", "Cabaret", "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", "West Side Story", "Singin' in the Rain", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Le notti di Cabiria", "Grease", "Hello Dolly!", "Sugar", "Dance!". Since 1997 he has been also artistic co-manager of Musical Italia, with which he has produced and directed "Grease" the show that has changed the outlook of musicals in Italy. In 2000 "Dance!", his first great hit of original musical of which he is not only the Director, but also inspirer and creative Co-ordinator, led him to engage in a new challenge: to give up the adaptation of imported musicals and to create new original ones to be performed in Italy as well as abroad. In the meantime, he has directed two musicals in Paris for the famous Folies Bergere and, in Broadway, the fringe-presentation of the original musical Mac Gregor. His experience in show business led him to try new things: the direction of the opera "Don Pasquale", of Gianni Morandi's concert "Come fa bene l'amore", of the advertising for the mineral water "Brio Blu Rocchetta" and a cinematographic project together with Susanna Tamaro and Roberta Mazzoni. In 2001 he took part in the Judges of Quality of Sanremo's Festival and of the Judges of the Oscar for TV. In 2002 he supervised the musical "Bulli & Pupe" and directed "Pinocchio", the new Italian musical created together with the Pooh and Pierluigi Ronchetti.
