Romano Gandolfi 

Orchestra Conductor

From 1968 to 1970 Romano Gandolfi was Director of the Chorus of the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires. From 1971 to 1983 he directed the Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and collaborated with Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Georges Prêtre, Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti and Riccardo Chailly. He assisted with the recordings of Verdi's operas conducted by Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Muti. His discography is very extensive.

Since 1970 he has alternated his directing of the chorus with his orchestral conducting and he has undertaken the latter in many theatres in Italy including: Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, Teatro Regio in Parma, Teatro Comunale in Bologna and Teatro Verdi in Trieste. He has also worked in la Zarzuela and Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, as well as in Paris, Berlin, and other important cities both in Europe and in the USA.

From 1984 to 1992 he was artistic consultant and Orchestra Director of the Gran Teatro del Liceu of Barcelona where he conducted many operatic masterpieces of the late 1800s as well as symphonic and choral works. Since 1991, he has been present in the Radio France programmes.

In 1994 he conducted the concert at the Teatro Regio in Parma to commemorate the death of Giuseppe Verdi and also Verdi's Messa da Requiem at the Associazione Lingotto Musica in Turin. He was a guest at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro where he conducted concerts with music by Brahms, Schubert, Rossini, Janacek and other composers. He is regularly invited to conduct opera productions at the Teatro Regio in Parma.

In 1998 he was invited to the Metropolitan in New York for the choral preparation of Moses und Aron by Schönberg. In 2001 he returned to collaborate with Claudio Abbado for Simon Boccanegra in Parma. In September 1998 he founded the Giuseppe Verdi Symphonic Chorus in Milan, a group of approximately 100 singers who take part in the symphonic season of the Giuseppe Verdi Symphonic Orchestra in Milan and in the discographic recordings for DECCA. As Conductor, Romano Gandolfi has conducted the Verdi Orchestra and Chorus for the annual Stabat Mater and for the Petite messe solennelle by Rossini, for Aleksander Nevskij by Prokof'ev and in September 2002 for Mozart's Requiem in memory of the victims of September 11th. In the 2002-2003 season he will conduct, among others, Ein deutsches Requiem by Brahms.
