Roland Olbeter

Scenographer and rob art. Lives and works in Barcelona since 1986.

Formally trained as a concert violinist and naval constructor, has worked extensively for the theatre, opera and cinema, as well as for sound and movement installations.

His work is of a technical sophistication most uncommon in the visual art and theatre. In his work for the opera he colaborates intensively with Carlos Padrisa de La Fura dels Baus. As set-designer he won the Franco Abbiatti award for the design of the Ring des Nibelungen recognizing the “futuristic, visionary and hyper technological vision that also respects a classical reading of Wagner”.

Through his scenic work, he has captivated audiences for theater, dance and opera. He premiered in many opera houses such as El Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, La Scala in Milan, Santuri Hall in Tokio, the Florence Maggio, Taschenoper Wien, Oper Köln, Marinski in St. Petersburgo, Staatsoper München, and Lincolenter in New York, among others. This allowed him to work with some of the most prestigious conductors like Zubin Mehta, Valery Georgiev, Lorin Maazel, Kent Nagano and Peter Rundel among others.

Roland Olbeter works since more than 10 years developing electro-acoustic instruments to perform music in festivals and museums. Within this work he realised the opera Orlando Furioso for 5 robotic instruments and soprano with music by German composer Michael Gross. At this moment he is focusing on a project of an automatic puppet opera with music by his instruments.

Roland Olbeter is supported by German high tech company FESTO in his crossover work of technology and art.
