
Guðjon Oskársson is an internationally renowned artist who enjoys a vast activity in both the operatic and concert repertory. Member of the Norwegian Opera in Oslo for several years, he is currently collaborating with numerous European theatres.
He received his musical education in his native town of Reykjavik and continued his studies at the Accademia d'Arte Lirica e Corale in Osimo, Italy and with Maestro Pier Miranda Ferraro in Milan.
In Oslo from 1990 to 1996, he interpreted numerous leading roles, notably Fafner, Hunding and Hagen in Wagner's
Ring Cycle. He later collaborated with Silvain Cambreling at the Frankfurt Opera and with Antonio Pappano at the Opéra de la Monnaie in Brussels in productions of
Un Ballo in Maschera,
Parsifal and
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. He performed Fafner at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Riccardo Muti, Hunding with Riccardo Chailly as well as Fasolt in Bilbao.
Further appearances include Toulouse, Marseille, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Reykjavik, and his debut with the Opéra Bastille in Paris as Titurel in
Parsifal. He sang as Raimondo in
Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bayerische Staatsoper, as Grande Inquisitore in
Don Carlos in Stockholm and as Sarastro in
Die Zauberflöte in Paris and more recently in Santa Fe. Among his recent engagements: Daland in
Der Fliegende Holländer at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste;
Die Walküre,
Götterdämmerung and
Lohengring in Chemnitz; and Hunding in
Die Walküre in Stockholm and Madrid.
He performed numerous times The Commendatore (
Don Giovanni) under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Daniel Harding, Simon Rattle, Ivor Bolton and Colin Davis, at the festivals in Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne as well as at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London, Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, in Oslo, Toulouse and Genoa. The Don Giovanni productions from Aix and Glyndebourne are available on CD.
In concert, Gudjon Oskarsson has appeared with such renowned orchestras as the London Symphony with Colin Davis, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Antonio Pappano, the Oslo Philharmonic with Maris Jansons and with numerous orchestras in Iceland and Norway. His repertoire includes such works as Beethoven's
Symphony n.9, Berlioz'
Messe Solennelle, Bruckner's
Te Deum, Mozart's
Requiem and
Mess in C minor, Rossini's
Stabat Mater, Strauss's
Daphne (Peneios) and Verdi's
Requiem.
At the Arena di Verona he will be the Commendatore in
Don Giovanni by Mozart, for the Opera Festival 2012.
