Graduated in Set and Costume Design at Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, from 1970 to 1980 he runs the Visual Art Centre “La Cappella Underground” in Trieste, showing an interest in the diverse expressions of contemporary art. In the same period, he becomes acquainted with artists like Joseph Beuys, Arnulf Reiner, Christo and Andy Warhol and establishes with them a precious collaboration. Afterwards in 1978 he creates the first Italian exhibit on Viennese Actionism, presenting artists like Gunter Brus, Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Heinz Cibulka, Otto Muhel and Hermann Nitsch of whom he produces the action 62. These experiences in the visual arts field will subsequently lead him, during his career as a set designer, to keep a particular attention towards the contemporary art, always present in his artistic research.
In 1978 he begins the career as a set designer and becomes Technical Director of the Teatro Stabile di Prosa del Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. Some years later, in 1999, he starts his co-operation with Italian theatre director Luca Ronconi at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Teatro d’Europa. Since 2001 he is Technical Director at the Fondazione Teatro Lirico “G. Verdi” in Trieste.
During his career he has worked with several directors like Giuseppe Patroni-Griffi, Gabriele Lavia, Giorgio Pressburgher, Walter Pagliaro, Antonio Calenda, Deda Cristina Colonna and in 1991 he starts his association with Federico Tiezzi.
Starting off in the Drama Theatre, from the beginning of the 90s he dedicates himself to the Opera Theatre, designing several operas such as Norma, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cavalleria Rusticana, Attila, Madama Butterfly, Boheme, Trovatore, Dido and Aeneas, La sonnambula, Lucia di Lammermoor, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Carmen, I Cavalieri di Ekebù, Manon Lescaut, Iris, Der Fliegende Holländer, Suor Angelica, La voix humaine, Otello, Simon Boccanegra and many others for prestigious theatres like the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Fondazione Teatro Lirico “G. Verdi”, the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, l’Opera de Monte-Carlo, l’Opéra National de Montpellier, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the National Greek Opera in Athens, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Regio in Turin, Asociación Bilbaina de Amigos de la Ópera Bilbao (Spain), The Baltimore Opera Company (USA), the Bunkamura Theatre in Tokyo and the Centre of Performing Arts in Osaka (Japan), the Pafos Aphrodite Festival in Cyprus (Cyprus), the Centre of Performing Arts in Seul (South Corea), the SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana (Slovenia), Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik (Austria), la New Israeli Opera di Tel-Aviv (Israel) e il Teatro de la Maestranza di Siviglia (Spain).
