His debut performances in NABUCCO at the Verona Arena (1981) and in AIDA at the Teatro alla Scala (1986) were swiftly followed by numerous appearances in the opera houses of Madrid, Barcellona, Munich, Paris, London, Ginevra, Zurich, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna and during the following years in the rest of the world; Australia, Japan, U.S.A. (Metropolitan, San Francisco Opera and Chicago Opera) He has worked with conductors of the calibre of Riccardo Muti (NABUCCO at the Teatro alla Scala in 1988), Georges Prêtre, James Colon, Giuseppe Patané, Nello Santi, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Sir Colin Davis, Zubin Mehta and John Eliot Gardiner.

His many memorable performances include DON GIOVANNI (Don Giovanni and Leporello), LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (Figaro), I PURITANI, NABUCCO (Zaccaria), SIMON BOCCANEGRA (Fiesco), DON CARLO (Filippo II), FAUST (Mefistofele), MEFISTOFELE (Mefistofele) e TURANDOT (Timur). In 1986 he toured China with Luciano Pavarotti for the Carlo Felice Theatre of Genoa production of LA BOHÈME and went to Vancouver with the Teatro alla Scala for a highly successful production of I LOMBARDI ALLA PRIMA CROCIATA. In 1987 he interpreted the role of Colline in the film-opera LA BOHÈME directed by Luigi Comencini and produced by Erato-Gaumont.

Francesco Ellero D’Artegna has over 30 recordings (Videos, CDs, or DVDs) to his credit amongst which IL TROVATORE (Ferrando), conducted by Zubin Mehta (Decca); LA BOHÈME (Colline), conducted by James Colon (Erato); MARIA STUARDA (Philips); LA SONNAMBULA (Bmg); I PURITANI with Edita Gruberova for Nightingale (for the same label he interpreted Don Basilio in the BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA), L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA (Seneca), conducted by John Eliot Gardiner (DG-Archiv) and ESMERALDA (Frollo) by Louise Bertin with Radio France.

Recent engagements include NABUCCO (Zaccaria), TOSCA (Scarpia) and BARBIERE (Don Basilio) in Tokyo; Hamburg, Munich, Venice at the Verona Arena (NABUCCO), PURITANI in Bern and Zurich, BARBIERE and the four HOFFMAN roles in Palermo, VERDI REQUIEM in Munich and Düsseldorf performances, in Athens (DON CARLO) the Arena di Avenches (DON GIOVANNI), San Paulo (FAUST, Gounod), Tel-Aviv and Vienna with the Wiener Symphoniker (VERDI REQUIEM), Paris with Radio France (DUCA D’ALBA), Florence performing Shostakovich’s 14TH SYMPHONY (sung for the first time in Italian). Recently he also made his debut as a stage director with AIDA at the Avenches Festival. Last year he sang DON GIOVANNI at the Avenches Festival, TOSCA (Scarpia) at the Locarno Opera Festival, NORMA at the Catania Bellini Festival, LUCIA in Reggio Calabria, DON CARLOS (Filippo II) in French at the Antwerpen Opera House, Verdi REQUIEM in Sweden and OBERTO in Berlin, LUCIA at the Avenches Festival, TURANDOT at the Taormina Festival and Boito’s Mefistofele (for the first time ever) at the Korean National Opera in Seoul.

Future engagements:
LE CID - DVD and performances at the Marsiglia Opera House, with Roberto Alagna, Nabucco (Zaccaria) at the Taormina Festival and at Arena di Verona and ANNA BOLENA (Enrico VIII) at the St. Moritz Festival.
