Gianfranco de Bosio 
STAGE DIRECTOR 

Gianfranco de Bosio is one of the greatest Italian theatre, cinema, television and grand opera directors of the 20th century and is still currently active.


At present he teaches Performing and Visual Arts at IULM University in Milan and Acting in Venetian dialects at the “Piccolo Teatro” School in Milan.

With his shows, he brought Renaissance playwright/actor Angelo Beolco, better known as Il Ruzzante, on the international scene; he produced Brecht’s first post-war productions in Italy and staged hundreds of works by playwrights such as Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Machiavelli, Calderón de la Barca, Molière, Goldoni, Alfieri, Chekhov, Shaw, Pirandello and the modernists (Svevo, Sartre, Moravia, etc.). Very famous is his production of “If This Is a Man” by Primo Levi which included fifty actors from all European countries.

His film “The Terrorist” is considered to be a classic in terms of films dedicated to the Resistance; “Moses the Lawgiver” with Burt Lancaster was Italian public TV broadcaster RAI’s first big production in English, scripted by Anthony Burgess and filmed entirely in Israel.

He has directed grand operas all over the world, such as those by Monteverdi, Haendel, Salieri, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Wagner’s tetralogy, Gounod, Massenet, Puccini and many contemporary composers.
He focuses especially on Verdi and has directed many of his works such as Oberto Count of San Bonifacio, Nabucco, Ernani, Traviata, The Troubadour, A Masked Ball, Don Carlos, Aida, Othello and Falstaff.

He has directed over twenty productions of Nabucco and Aida both in Italy and abroad, as well as their television and film adaptations.
He produced the film version of Puccini’s Tosca, which starred Placido Domingo, Raina Kabaivanska and Sherrill Milnes and was filmed entirely at the locations indicated by the composer.
He has filmed the complete versions of La Traviata and Rigoletto in Educational videos produced by the International Institute for Opera and Poetry, founded by UNESCO in Verona.
He has directed the editions of Mozart's Trilogy with Peter Maag in Treviso and Daniele Gatti in Bologna, starring internationally renowned singers.
