Nino Surguladze was born in Tbilisi in Georgia where she later attended the University, following a course on journalism and television. After having won many prizes in the repertoire of both popular and classical music, she took part in a number of important films, winning several prizes as an actress. In 1995, she enrolled at the Tbilisi Conservatoire, obtaining her diploma in 2001 with the highest marks possible. She has taken part in many international singing competitions, winning that of Toulouse and taking second prize at the Vinas Competition in Barcelona. In 2001, she entered the Accademia della Scala, the opera house where she made her debut in March 2002 with a small part in Strauss’s Salomé. In the same year, she sang in Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi conducted by Nicola Luisotti. She also sang the part of Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri and Prince Luigi V in Ugo, Conte di Parigi.
In December 2003, she started the Season at La Scala, singing the part of Maria in Moïse et Pharaon, conducted by Riccardo Muti and also took part in the Christmas concert 2003 – again under the baton of Muti – recorded live by R.A.I. [an Italian radio and television company]. She was chosen as Meg in Falstaff and took part in the new production of Ariodante in Frankfurt. She has sung a number of different roles in many operatic performances. Among the latter were Così fan tutte in Genoa, Madama Butterfly in Tokyo and Rigoletto in Barcellona. Further, she appeared in Idomeneo (in its inaugural production) and Gli Stivaletti at La Scala, as well as in Evgenij Onegin at La Scala, conducted by Jurwski, and in its new production at Covent Garden, conducted by Jordan. Of late, she has worked in the new production of Matrimonio al Convento at the Glyndebourne Festival, La Damnation de Faust and La Clemenza di Tito at the Teatro Regio in Parma and Carmen in Bari and Graz. Her future engagements include – in addition to her first appearance at the Arena di Verona in Nabucco – Carmen in Barcelona and Graz and a new production of Evgenji Onegin at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. She will sing in Norma in Tel Aviv with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. She will make her first appearance in the role of Federica in Luisa Miller in Barcelona, in the part of Nicklausse in the new production of the Racconti di Hoffmann in Hamburg and Turin and will sing Ariodante in Frankfurt. In addition, she will be Dorabella in Così fan tutte at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. During the last Season, she made her first appearance at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Next year, she will first appear with the Berlin Philharmoniker in Dvorák’sRequiem Mass and will sing in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with the Utrecht Radio Chamber Philharmonie.
In the 2007 summer opera festival at the Arena he will perform the part of Fenena in Nabucco.
