The futuristic production of Verdi’s Aida is the work of
Carlus Padrissa and
Àlex Ollé, their assistant and choreographer
Valentina Carrasco, scenographer
Roland Olbeter and costume designer
Chu Uroz. The lighting has been designed by Arena veteran
Paolo Mazzon. Making his début at the Arena will be the conductor,
Omer Meir Wellber. The opera will use an impressive number of artists – the Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet, the Arena troupe of technicians along with a hundred or so extras on stage – for this setting with avant-garde technology.
For la Fura dels Baus team this is a double début: it is the first time they are dealing with this Verdi opera and it is also their first time directing a work in the Arena.
International voices give life to this spectacular version which will be performed on
11 evenings between 14th June and 3rd August. Along with the principal interpreters, there will be a cast of 175 on stage: extras, mimers and walk-ons, 164 choristers, 40 ballerinas, not to mention the parade of suggestive, mechanical animals, 3 camels and an elephant, to tell something more than a story, looking to the future of opera in the Arena. In addition to the love story between Aida and Radamès and the war between Ethiopia and Egypt, we see the pace of progress and of the industrial revolution which marked the 19th Century.
