Gabriele Schnaut
SOPRANO
Gabriele Schnaut studied at the Frankfurt Conservatory and then in Berlin. She began her career as a mezzosoprano in the Stuttgart, Darmstadt and Mannheim theatres and then, as a dramatic soprano, she performed in Hamburg and at the Festival of Bayreuth (1977) where she subsequently became a frequent guest.

Since then she has been a protagonist in Wagner's repertoire (Ring, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde, Götterdämmerung) in the most important theatres in the world: from Cleveland, Chicago and Tokyo with conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle and Christian Thielemann. With Giuseppe Sinopoli she was Elektra at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1994, a role which she interpreted many times at the MET in New York, Vienna and Munich. She also performed many times in Turandot and Tosca by Puccini and in Die Frau ohne Schatten by Strauss.

Gabriele Schnaut's engagements for 2003 include a new production of Götterdämmerung and of Ring in Munich with Zubin Mehta, as well as Elektra in Hamburg.
