Sarah M'Punga
Although Sarah M'Punga's nationality is Italian, she is of both Italian and Zairean origins. She studied voice, pianoforte and classical dance in Italy and was awarded a diploma from the Conservatory in Verona. Contemporarily, she carried out studies in humanities.

She made her debut at the early age of 17 at the opera season in the Teatro Verdi in Sassari.

When she was only 23 years old she won first prize at the international competition 'Voci Pucciniane' (Puccini voices) in Milan, which opened many international doors for her: she was Amneris in the 'blue" Aida by Pier Luigi Pizzi at the Arena di Verona conducted by Daniel Oren. She also interpreted this role during the Verdi festivities in Busseto directed by Franco Zeffirelli, at the Teatro Comunale in Florence directed by Lorenzo Mariani, in Amsterdam directed by P. Ionesco, in Geneva and at the Pyramids conducted by Anton Guadagno.

She has performed in the role of Carmen in at least 13 productions: a memorable production was at the Perelada Festival (alongside Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu). She also gave a splendid performance in this opera in Anvers which was shown live on television and was recorded to be made into a film, while in Rome she recorded for Radio3. She also interpreted the role of Carmen in Sofia for the inauguration of the Music Festival Palace of Culture which was broadcasted live on television and radio, as well as in the city of Mexico at the Bellinzona Festival. In the future she will take this role to the Avenches Festival.

Other roles from her repertoire are: Fenena in Nabucco at the Arena di Verona (conducted by Daniel Oren and directed by Hugo De Ana) and at the Avenches Festival directed by Renzo Giacchieri. She sang in the role of Maddalena in Rigoletto at the Arena di Verona which was recorded for DVD and for RAI (Roubau-Viotti) and Olga in Evgenij Onegin in Trieste.

She also interpreted Cavalleria Rusticana in Japan with the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Messa da Requiem, the aunt princess in Suor Angelica, Eboli in Don Carlos, Dalila in Sansone e Dalila, the princess of Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur and Ulrica in Ballo in Machera.

In 2002 the mezzosoprano plays the role of Carmen in the opera of the same name at the Arena di Verona and she will be present at the Avenches Festival in 2003 where she will play Azucena in Il Trovatore.
