Corps de Ballet
The history step by step since 1980
The history of our Corps de Ballet The corps de ballet of the Fondazione Arena di Verona, after numerous years of seasonal work in the Arena for the annual Summer Opera Festival, assumed a permanent position at the beginning of the 1980s, which it still holds today, following the wishes of Roberto Fascilla who was the director of the corps de ballet at that time. This permanent post enabled the company to develop its activities all year long: in winter at the Teatro Filarmonico and in summer in the Arena and in the Roman Theatre.
Following the directorship of Fascilla, Giuseppe Carbone, Mario Pistoni, Pierre Lacotte, Carla Fracci and Robert North took on the position at various stages. Currently the company is directed by Maria Grazia Garofoli.
The corps de ballet benefited greatly from the alternating of the various prestigious Directors who all had different cultural and artistic roots. It allowed the company the possibility to expand and develop, becoming familiar with choreographic structures and elaborate and diverse dance styles.
The strong point of the Arena Corps de ballet is the variety of its artistic performances. This diversity allows the company to propose performances which are capable of pleasing a great and varied audience. The company has accumulated a magnificent repertoire having staged performances like Giselle, Les Sylphides, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker Suite, Swan Lake, Coppelia and La Sylphide (with dancers like Fracci, Terabust, Nureyev, Jancu, Savignano, and, more recently, Yebra, Bolle, Hatala, Veterova, Koukova and Romagna) but it has also retrieved the original choreographies by Nijinski, and performed the early 20th century ones by Massine and the contemporary ones by Cullberg, Matz Ek, Balanchine and Kiljan.
It has also worked with contemporary choreographers like Amodio, Brigonzetti, Bouy, Morricone and North; the corps de ballet has also performed in the multimedia shows by Ezralow and has taken part in special shows organized for schools and for young people and has also performed in great events in the Arena like Excelsior, Spartacus and Zorba the Greek.
