Nino Machaidze is one of the most brilliant artists of today’s young generation of singers. Born in Tbilisi in Georgia in 1983 and a graduate of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Machaidze appeared at La Scala as Marie in Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment in 2007. It was those performances, followed by her debut at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in the same role, that launched her international career. In the summer of 2008 Machaidze made a sensational debut at the Salzburg Festival as Juliette in the new production of Romeo et Juliette opposite Rolando Villazon. She has since made important international debuts in theaters including the Metropolitan Opera, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Berlin State Opera, Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Theatre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels, Oprea National, Paris, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and at the Los Angeles Opera.
In the autumn of 2012 Nino Machaidze added the title role in Massenet’s Thais to her repertoire in Seville opposite the Athanael of Placido Domingo. She will return to the Theatre Royale de La Monnaie in a concert version of Romeo et Juliette. She will sing Fiorilla in Il Turco in Italia at the Gran Tetaro del Liceu in Barcelona. Machaidze will also make her debut at the Vienna State Opera Staatsoper in Romeo et Juliette, in June of 2013. Future projects also include Il Turco in Italia at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Lucia di Lammermoor for La Monnaie and L’Elisir d’Amore at the Vienna State Opera. She will also return to the Los Angeles Opera in Thais.
Nino Machaidze began her 2011/2012 season with her debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Gilda in Rigoletto. During the course of the season she also appeared there as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and as Adina in L’Elisir D’Amore. She returned to the Los Angeles Opera as Juliette in Romeo et Juliette and then to the Metropolitan Opera to star in the revival of La Fille du Regiment. In January of 2012, Machaidze made her French operatic debut at the Opera National de Paris in Rigoletto, a work she also performs in Las Palmas. In the summer of 2012, she appeared as Musetta in La Bohème in the new production at the Salzburg Festival where her colleagues included Anna Netrebko and Peter Beczala.
Nino Machaidze began her vocal studies at the age of seven and completed her vocal studies at the conservatory in Tbilisi, and appeared there at the Paliashvili Theater as Gilda, Norina in Don Pasquale and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. First Prize Winner in the Leyla Gencer Vocal Competition in Istanbul, she entered the Accademia of the Scala in 2005 and was soon on stage at the Scala in roles such as Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi under Riccardo Chailly and Musetta in La Bohème. She made her first appearances as Amina in La Sonnambula at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa under Daniel Oren in 2008.
In the fall of 2008 Machaidze debuted at the Teatro Regio in Parma as Gilda in Rigoletto. She subsequently made her debut in Amsterdam in Romeo et Juliette at the Concertgebeouw. She sang her first Elvira in I Puritani at the Teatro Comunale of Bologna in January of 2009 opposite Juan Diego Florez, followed by her debut at the Teatro la Fenice as Juliette. In April of 2009 Machaidze sang her first Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor for her debut at the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie in Brussels, later repeating the role in Salerno under Daniel Oren. This was followed by Vienna debut as Fiorilla in Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia at the Theater an der Wien in July of 2009.
In September of 2009 Machaidze made her North American debut at the Los Angeles Opera as Adina in L’Elisir D’Amore. These performances marked her debut in the role. She also made her debut at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in the new production of L’Elisir in December of 2009, and this was followed in January 2010 by her Spanish stage debut at the El Palau de la Reina Sofia in Valencia as Lucia. She then debuted at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona in La Fille du Regiment. In May of 2010 Machaidze made her debut at the Berlin State Opera as Adina, and in the summer of 2010 she returned to Salzburg for a reprise of Romeo et Juliette.
Nino Machaidze returned to La Scala in the fall of 2010 as Adina opposite the Nemorino of Rolando Villazon. She then made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Juliette and returned to Munich as Adina. In January 2011 Machaidze made her Metropolitan Opera Debut as Gilda in Rigoletto. After which she appeared at the Los Angeles Opera in Il Turco in Italia. She proceeded to make her debut at Teatro Fillamonico in her first performances of Leila in Bizet’s Les Percheurs de Perles. Machaidze was also heard at the Scala returned to La Scala as Juliette opposite Vittorio Grigolo. She appeared in the same role to the Arena di Verona in the summer of 2011.
Other roles in her developing repertoire include the Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Amenaide in Tancredi , Giulietta in I Capuleti ed I Montecchi the title role in Massenet’s Manon , and Marfa in The Tsar’s Bride.
