Vladimir Malakhov is recognized world-wide as one of the greatest dancers of his generation. A multi-award winner with first prizes from international competitions in Varna, Moscow and Paris and hailed as "Dancer of the Century" by European critics, Malakhov has dazzled audiences with his combination of technical brilliance and lyrical eloquence.
Born in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine, Mr Malakhov began his dance training at the age of four at a local ballet school there. He continued his studies at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow from the age of ten under the tutelage of Petr Pestov, and upon graduation in 1986 he joined the Moscow Classical Ballet as the company's youngest principal dancer. Mr Malakhov joined the Vienna State Opera Ballet as a principal artist in 1992, and the National Ballet of Canada in 1994. In the spring of 1995 Mr Malakhov had his debut with the American Ballet Theater at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Mr Malakhov's repertory encompasses a wide range, from the major ballets of the classical repertory to the works by the leading choreographers of the twentieth century. Major choreographers of today have created ballets specially for Vladimir Malakhov.
A sought-after artist, Vladimir Malakhov performs in the most prestigious ballet venues with the major dance companies world-wide.
In 2002 Vladimir Malakhov was appointed Artistic Director and Principal Dancer of the Ballet ensemble of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. In addition, Mr Malakhov is a Principal Dancer of the American Ballet Theater and Principal Guest Artist of the Vienna State Opera.
