Orchestra Conductor and Pianist
Philippe Entremont is an Orchestra Director and pianist from France and was born on June 6th, 1934 in Reims. He made his debut in 1950 and won 1st prize at the Marguerite Long - Jacques Thibaud International Competition.
Since then he has been performing both as a pianist and a conductor, in all continents and with the principal international orchestras: Berliner Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Paris, National de France, Royal Philharmonic, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Wiener Symphoniker, all of the major American orchestras, NHK and in Italy, among others, the Orchestra of the National Academy of Saint Cecilia.
Philippe Entremont is currently the Pricipal Conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and of the Israel Chamber Orchestra, and Conductor Laureate of the Wiener Kammerorchester and goes on extensive tours annually with these orchestras.
With the Wiener Kammerorchester he has participated in the most exclusive festivals: Salzburg, Carinthischer, Schleswig-Holstein, Santander, etc.
His discography, one of the most vast ever, can boast as many as one hundred albums for CBS, Sony, EMI, Pro Arte, Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, etc.
The artist collaborates with orchestra conductors who are famous worldwide, like Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, having also, to his credit, a lot of chamber music and music only for piano. He also carried out a complete recording of Ravel's work for piano and Saint-Saëns' work for pianoforte and orchestra. His recordings of Stravinsky, Berstein, Milhaud, Jolivet, Satie, Dohnanyi, Saint-Saëns, Litolff (CBS Masterworks) were very successful with the critics. Recently he carried out a recording with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, as conductor and soloist, of the complete cycle of concerts for pianoforte by Beethoven.
Currently Philippe Entremont is the Conductor of the famous American Conservatory in Fontainbleau. He has received many professional honours, like the Grand Prix International du Disque, Netherlands' Edison Award, New Orleans' International Order of Merit, Grammy Nomination, he also obtained, in France, the position of Officiel de la legion d'Honneur and in Austria, the Cross of Honour of the First Class for Arts and Sciences.
In 2002 Mr. Entremont was on tour with the I Pomeriggi musicali Orchestra of Milan and performed as a conductor and pianist, with a programme which was based around music by Mozart. He participated in 4 concerts at the Teatro del Verme in Milan, in Vigevano, Monza and in a performance for the Accademia Filarmonica of Messina.
