Vjekoslav Sutej studied with Igor Gjadrov, Franco Ferrara and Sergiu Celibidache. From 1990 to 1993 he was musical Director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and from 1992 to 1997 he took on the same role for the Opera House in Houston.
Since 2002 Vjekoslav Šutej has been the Director of the musical programme for the Summer Festival in Dubrovnick.
From 1990-1996 he was also principal Director and Artistic Manager of the Reál Orquesta de Sevilla in Spain.
Vjekoslav Sutej, who had an extensive and varied operatic repertoire, was frequently a guest in the most important theatres in Italy, Spain, Austria, the United States and Japan.
He has conducted concerts which featured opera stars like José Carreras (Frankfurt, Concert for New Year's Eve 1991 and in the Arena di Verona in 1995), Montserrat Caballé (Festival di Orange and Festival di Epidauro), Placido Domingo (Concert for Christmas in Vienna for 4 consecutive years).
Some of Vjekoslav Sutej's most recent engagements included La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly in Vienna, Manon in Montreal, Madama Butterfly in Seattle and a "gala" with Maria Guleghina in Tokyo.
In February 2002 he conducted Pagliacci by Leoncavallo at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, while at the Arena di Verona he conducted Carmen in 1993, Aida in 2003, Rigoletto in 2003 and 2004, Nabucco in 2005.
In the 2006 summer opera festival at the Arena he conducted Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci.
He has passed away on december 2nd 2009 at the age of 58 years in a Zagabrian Hospital.
