Raimonda Gaetani was born in Naples, where she studied architecture. For the theater, directed by Zeffirelli, in 1973 she designed costumes for Sabato, domenica e lunedì of Eduardo De Filippo with Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright in the Old Vic and sets and costumes of Filumena Marturano at the Lyric Theatre in London , then reprized at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen and the National Theatre in Oslo.
Since 1974 she started working with Eduardo De Filippo, for which she designed the sets and costumes of his productions in Rome, Naples and Florence. She also works in many television productions of De Filippo, Scarpetta and Pirandello. At the National Theatre in London she creates sets and costumes for Inner voices with Ralph Richardson, directed by Mike Ockrent.
Again for Zeffirelli, at the Greek Theatre in Taormina, she creates the costumes for Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore by Pirandello. In 1984, she creates the costumes of Ibsen's Spettri, directed by Kirsten Sorlie at Rogaland Theater in Norway, followed by Sabato, domenica e lunedì and La grande magia of De Filippo. For the National Theatre in Bergen she works in Don Giovanni, directed by Bentein Baardson, followed by Lorca’s Bernarda Alba. In 1999 she creates sets and costumes for Il Suicida by Nikolai Erdman in Bergamo.
She receives the Oliver Award Nomination for Best Costume Design of the year for Absolutely, perhaps (Così è, se vi pare) of Pirandello, directed by Zeffirelli at Windham Theatre, with Joan Plowright. With Luca De Filippo she collaborates to several comedies of his father and in Don Giovanni by Moliere. She works with many Italian directors, including Armando Pugliese, Carlo Cecchi, Enrico Maria Salerno and Mario Monicelli.
For opera, she creates the sets and costumes of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci for Opera North in 1992 and Pagliacci, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, with Placido Domingo, for the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, also represented in Los Angeles and at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
Always directed by Zeffirelli in 2003 she creates a new production of Pagliacci for the Covent Garden in London, and in 2005 another new edition of Pagliacci for the Hellenic Festival at the Herodes Atticus Theatre in Athens, in 2007 at the Kremlin Palace of Moscow, and later at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. She creates costumes for Verdi's La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in November 1998. In 2007 she creates the costumes for La Traviata directed by Franco Zeffirelli at the Rome Opera, represented in 2008 at the Teatro Verdi in Salerno directed by Daniel Oren, at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, at the Rome Opera and at the Teatro della Maestranza in Siviglia.
For the ballet she draws Esoterik Satie by Lorca Massine at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Pulcinella for the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Gaieté Parisienne for Garnier Theatre in Montecarlo and the Bolshoi Theatre, for the Grand Theatre in Geneva she makes the costumes of Peer Gynt by Jamey Hampton, Capriccio for the Rome Opera music by Stravinsky, choreography by Lorca Massine. Directed by Beppe Menegatti signature she signs the sets and costumes of Maria Stuarda ultima notte and The Nutcracker at the National Theatre of Rome with Carla Fracci, and Raymonda for the Opera of Rome.
For movies, she works with Nando Scarfiotti in Avanti directed by Billy Wilder, with Danilo Donati for Casanova (Academy Award for Best Costume Design) directed by Federico Fellini. She creates costumes for Un cuore semplice directed by Giorgio Ferrara. She works as art director for the films Il giovane Toscanini with Elizabeth Taylor and Storia di una Capinera by Zeffirelli. She is Production designer for the special Leonardo 2000, an experimental production in showscan, directed by Douglas Trumbull.
At Teatro Filarmonico in Verona she makes her debut in 2012 creating the costumes for Zeffirelli's Pagliacci. At the Arena di Verona she debuts in 2001 creating the costumes for the Verdi’s Trovatore proposed again in 2002, 2004, 2010.
She returns in Arena to the Centennial Festival 2013 for Il Trovatore.
