Scenographer and Costume Designer
Paul Brown was born in Glamorgan in Great Britain and studied at the Riverside Studios with Margaret Harris. He has designed the stage sets for numerous operas.
Amongst these are Mitridate, re di Ponto, Falstaff, The Midsummer marriage and I Masnadieri at the Royal Opera House, King Arthur at the Royal Opera House and at the Châtelet in Paris and Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk district and Moses und Aron at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. There have also been his stage designs for Pelléas et Mélisande and Lulu at the Glyndebourne Opera House; Peter Grimes and Parsifal at the Opéra-Bastille in Paris, Don Carlos at the Sydney Opera House and Rigoletto in Madrid. Finally, we should mention Thaïs at the Lyric Opera in Chicago; Katya Kabanova in Santa Fe; Fidelio at the Birmingham Opera and at the English National Opera and Vanessa and Hamlet in Monte Carlo. For the Almeida Theatre, he produced The Tempest, The Showman and naked, in Gainsborough staged Riccardo II and Coriolanus and in Kings Cross, Platonov and Re Lear. In Italy, he produced L’Incoronazione di Poppea in Bologna, Giselle at the Scala in Milan, Man of la Mancha at Broadway and Amleto in Tokyo. He also created the sets for the films Angels and insects (nominated for an Oscar) and Up at the villa. Amongst his latest productions we should note: Mefistofele in Amsterdam, The Paris letter on Broadway, The False servant at the Royal National Theatre, Il Flauto magico in Salzburg; La Traviata at the Arena di Verona and Anna Bolena at Teatro Filarmonico di Verona. For more than fifteen year Paul Brown has worked with Graham Vick and together they have been responsible for many important productions in Europe and the United States.
