Alexander Toradze

Alexander Toradze is internationally recognized by musicians, critics and audiences alike as a masterful keyboard virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition, distinguished for the highly emotional intensity of his playing. He has enriched the great Russian pianistic heritage with his own boldly unorthodox interpretative conceptions, deeply poetic lyricism and visceral excitement.

During the past seasons, Mr Toradze has appeared with Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra in Dusseldorf and six North American cities, including New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C. He rejoined M° Gergiev with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and again with the Kirov Orchestra in London's Barbican Hall. He has also appeared with Esa Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Yukka Pekka Saraste leading the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Gerard Schwarz leading the Seattle Symphony, as well as performances in Hong Kong and Santiago. Summer festivals where he frequently appears include the "White Nights Festival" in St. Petersburg, Hollywood Bowl, Saratoga, Blossom, Waterloo, Concertgebouw, Schleswig-Holstein, the Mikkeli Festival in Finland, the Stresa Festival in Italy.

His recording of Prokofiev's 7th Sonata, Ravel's Miroirs and Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit was greeted with acclaim. Mr Toradze has also recorded all five of Prokofiev Concertos for the Philips Classics label with the Kirov Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev as well as Alexander Scrjabin's Prometheus and Stravinski's Piano Concerto, presented with big success at the Salzburg Festival during Summer 2000.

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Alexander Toradze graduated in 1978 from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and from 1983 he has been living in the United States and repeatedly appears with virtually every major North American orchestra, including those of New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Montreal, Pittsburgh and Washington DC.
