Federico Bertolani begins to work in the theater as a dancer. In this phase he collaborates with the choreographers Manuela Tagliavia, Leda Lojodice and Cristine Perrot deepening his study of the gesture and choreography. In 2004 he graduates cum laude in Literature at the Università Statale of Milan. The research he conducts for his degree thesis brings him to attend a course on Teather directing, initially given by Gianfranco De Bosio and later by Cesare Lievi.
With the latter he starts to collaborate, in the role of assistant director, for the production of several shows of both spoken theater and opera; among them Betrayal from Harold Pinter for the Eliseo Theater in Rome, in collaboration with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and the Teatro Stabile di Brescia and, for the opera, L’italiana in Algeri and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Opernhaus in Zurich, and Die Entfhurüng aus dem Seraill for the Fondazione Lirica Teatro Petruzzelli and the theaters of Bari.
At the same time he works as stage manager in different Italian theater institutions like Sferisterio Opera Festival, Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, Teatro Sociale in Rovigo and Fondazione Arena di Verona. Under this role he collaborates to the mise en scène of several performances directed by Denis Krief, Hugo De Hana, Franco Zeffirelli, Pierluigi Pizzi and Stefano Poda.
In 2010 he is appointed by the Regione Lombardia to teach Theatre Direction and History of dance in a master course for young choreographers.
Since a few years he started his activity as a director in Emilia Romagna, where he staged Attila and Die lustige Witwe and then in Veneto, where he staged Rigoletto and La Traviata in Rossano Veneto, for Veneto Opera Estate Festival. This latter productions was later staged in “Tra Ville e Giardini” Festival, organized by Teatro Sociale di Rovigo and sponsored by Regione Veneto.
In October 2012 Bertolani signs a new production of Maria Stuarda for Teatro Donizzetti in Bergamo, during Bergamo Musica Festival. Dicember 2012 is the time for Don Giovanni, a new staging for Bassano Opera Festival. In 2014 Bertolani will direct the first première of The Water Babies in Teatro Sociale (Rovigo), a new opera written by Paolo Furlani.
