Mischa Damev

Orchestra Conductor

Mischa Damev was born in 1963 and received his first music lessons from his grandfather, a well-known orchestra conductor. At the age of 10 he moved to Switzerland with his family.

After having studied in Zurich and Basel, he became a student of Alexis Weissenberg's in Paris and of Nikita Magalof's in Geneva. In 1986 he received his diploma in pianoforte from the Basel Conservatory. Between 1991 and 2000 Damev was the Artistic Director of the "Orpheum" International Festival for Young Soloists and in 2002 he became a member of the Board of Directors of the "Masterprize" Competition for Contemporary Music.

In 1993 he interrupted his career as a pianist, in the course of which he had performed in Germany, England, France, Canada, Bulgaria and Switzerland, and instead began to study orchestra conducting under the guidance of Karl Österreicher in Vienna. For a number of years he collaborated with the Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mariss Jansons.

Subsequently, he worked in this capacity with prestigious orchestras among which were the Tchaikovsky Symphonic Orchestra of Moscow, I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, the Symphonic Orchestras of Lucerne and Zurich, the North Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestras of Lubjana, Zagabria, Bratislava and Brno.

At present he conducts the Tchaikovsky Symphonic Orchestra in Moscow in the position of Guest Conductor.

In the 2002/2003 season he conducted the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra on the occasion of the Interlaken Festival, while next year he will return to conduct I Pomeriggi Musicali and the Symphonic Orchestra of Lucerne as well as collaborating with the Kammerakademie in Potsdam.
