Elena Traversi
She obtained her diploma at the Brescia Conservatory in 1996 with Ida Bormida, and then specialized with Alain Charles Billard.

Endowed with a vocal style of rare beauty and elegance, Elena Traversi has taken part in opera and concert seasons in prestigious theatres and institutions such as the Frankfurt Opera House, the Auditorium Nacional of Madrid, the Arena of Verona and the Ravenna Festival. Her dark and velvet timbre has been appreciated by the greatest conductors: Carlo Maria Giulini chose her for Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and then Massimo De Bernart, Raphael De Burgos, Riccardo Frizza, Renato Palumbo, Marcello Rota and, recently, Maestro Myung-Wung Chung. In the same way great directors with whom she worked, like Luca Ronconi and Beppe De Tomasi, have recognized her intense stage presence and her capacity to live inside the roles she interprets.

In 2000 she won the “Primo palcoscenico” Award, and sang in her debut role as “Suzuki “ in Madama Butterfly at the Bonci Theatre of Cesena.
After which she interpreted at the Communal Theatre of Narni the role of the “Zia Principessa” in Suor Angelica and then she participated two times to the Wexford Festival in Ireland. In 2001 she was “Quickly” in Falstaff and in 2002 “Dejanira” in Martinu’s Mirandolina, live broadcasted by the BBC.

This brilliant beginning was followed by a dense series of invitations by Italian theatres such as the Petruzzelli of Bari, the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, the Ponchielli of Cremona, the Communal Theatre of Ferrara, and then Brescia, Como, Cosenza, Novara, Pavia, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, where she sang in the role of “Maddalena” in Rigoletto by Verdi, “Emilia” in Otello by Verdi, “Venceslava” in Rendano’s Consuelo, “Clairon” in Strauss’s Capriccio, “Isabella” in L’Italiana in Algeri and “Zaida” in Il turco in Italia both by Rossini. With the suppleness of her vocal technique she also distinguished herself in the baroque repertoire: the critics acclaimed her interpretations of “Ericlea” in Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria and of “Ottone” and “Nutrice” in L’incoronazione di Poppea under Ottavio Dantone with the Accademia Bizantina. Again in the baroque field, in 2004 she was at the Frankfurt Opera House in the role of “Polinesso” in Handel’s Ariodante conducted by Andrea Marcon. In March 2010 she sang in Dido and Aeneas at Teatro La Fenice of Venice, with the direction of Saburo Teshigawara and the conduction of Attilio Cremonesi.

The refinement and special quality of her voice has also been acclaimed in the sacred and lieder repertoire: with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Arena of Verona she has sung Haydn’s Nelson Messe, Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestra of the Bergamo Music Festival and the Prague Chamber Choir, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus and Stabat Mater, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solemnelle and Schumann’s Frauen Lieben und Leben.

In the sphere of 20th century music she has given brilliant executions of Berio’s Folk Songs at the Sala Maffeiana in Verona and Flow my Dowland by Fabio Vacchi at the Sala Casella in Roma.

In October 2009 she interpreted the role of Hippolyta in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari And at the Valli Theater of Reggio Emilia with the direction of Daniele Abbado and the conduction of Jonathan Webb.
