Orchestra Conductor

In 1997 Antonello Manacorda, in collaboration with Claudio Abbado and colleagues from the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester, founded the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Antonello Manacorda was appointed vice-president and concertmaster, a position he held for eight years until he decided to pursue a career as a conductor. He was awarded a scholarship by De Sono in Turin which enabled him to spend two years studying with Jorma Panula.

In September 2006 Antonello Manacorda was appointed Music Director of I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan. Their first three seasons together have been extremely successful and Manacorda has been winning praise from critics and demonstrating his talent for creating intelligent and interesting programmes.

In December 2007 Manacorda made his conducting début with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in two concerts to celebrate the orchestra’s 10th anniversary. This resulted in a re-invitation to open the Bremen Festival with the orchestra. Among other orchestras Manacorda has guest conducted are the Orchestra of La Fenice, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Zürich Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestra of Scottish Opera and the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris.

Future engagements include the Kammerakademie Potsdam, Gelders Orkest, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and a tour of Switzerland with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
In June 2008 Manacorda led a course for the Britten-Pears Orchestra culminating in a concert at the Aldeburgh Festival and was immediately reinvited to appear in Aldeburgh at the Easter Festival in 2010.

Antonello Manacorda’s recent opera engagements include working with the Maggio Musicale Orchestra in Florence; performances of Paisiello’s opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Arcimboldi in Milan; Così fan tutte at the Teatro Comunale di Treviso, Falstaff with ASLICO in Pavia, Brescia and Cremona and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.

In May 2010 he will conduct a production of Don Giovanni at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Antonello Manacorda was born in Turin and studied violin with Sergio Lamberto at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, graduating with distinction. He was then awarded a scholarship by De Sono Associazione per la Musica, which enabled him to continue his studies with Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam, Eduard Shmider and Franco Gulli.
From 2003-2006 Antonello Manacorda was Artistic Director for chamber music at the Académie Européenne de Musique du Festival d’Aix en Provence.
