Fabio Mastrangelo has been defined as the most famous Italian conductor in contemporary Russia.
He was born in Bari, and after collaborating with the Teatro Petruzzelli he has studied conducting.
From 1993 to 2002 he has been Music Director of the University of Toronto Hart House Chamber Strings.
In 1996 he founded the chamber Orchestra Virtuosi di Toronto, holding the position of Artistic Director up to 2003.
He has been living in St Petersburg since 2002: there he has been performing in the most important music events in Russia, and he is constantly collaborating with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2002 he has made his operatic debut in St Petersburg, with La Traviata
by Verdi at the Mussorgsky State Theatre, where he later conducted Verdi’s Requiem
As guest conductor, he has collaborated with many important American, Canadian and European orchestras.
He has been the conductor of the Orchestra della Società dei Concerti in Bari for two seasons (2005-2007).
Since 2007 he has been one of the conductors of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he has debuted with Tosca

In 2009 he made his debut at the Teatro Nazionale dell’Opera in Rome with Bob Wilson’s Aida
, co-produced by the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the La Monnaie Theatre in Brussels. He inaugurated the new Teatro Petruzzelli with two performances of Beethoven's Symphony no. 9
, and conducted a concert with music by Jon Lord (Deep Purple founder).
He has recently inaugurated a new production of Aida
at the Ermitage Theatre in St Petersburg, and he conducted its orchestra on the occasion of a long tour in Italy; at the Mariinsky he has conducted La Forza del Destino
by Verdi, and La Traviata
at the Krasnojarsk Opera (Russia). Simultaneously, he has been Artistic Director of the Ensemble “Camerata” of the Novosibirsk State Philharmonic and, since 2006, Musical Advisor of the Fondazione Petruzzelli in Bari.
He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra.
