Georgian soprano and daughter of the famous baritone Avtandil Javakishvili, Tamar Iveri studied singing at the Conservatory in Tibilisi and first came to the public’s attention as
Desdemona in May 1998. The same year, she won second prize at the “Voce Verdiane” competition in Bussetto. In 1999, she won first prize at the Mozart Competition in Salzburg.
Recent opera appearances have included
Don Carlo (Bonn),
Simone Boccanegra (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Covent Garden),
La Bohème (Vienna Staatsoper),
Don Giovanni (Covent Garden) and
Otello (Venice), an opera she has also performed under the direction of Riccardo Muti, with La Scala on tour in Japan. In 2004, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival as Fiordiligi in a new production of
Cosi fan tutte and the following year at the Metropolitan Opera (
Don Giovanni). More recently, she gave her Paris debut in
Don Carlo at the Opera de la Bastille, as well as debuts with the Houston Grand Opera (
Faust) and the Arena di Verona (
La Bohème). Furthermore, she returned to the Vienna Staatsoper (
I Pagliacci, La Boheme) and the Metropolitan Opera (
La Clemenza di Tito) and sang Donna Anna in Toulouse and Hamburg.
The 2008/09 season saw her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich (
Eugene Onegin), and a return to the MET for
Don Giovanni, and to the Vienna Staatsoper for
Onegin.
Opera highlights in 2009/10 include
Otello at the New National Theatre Tokyo, her role debut as
Elettra (Idomeneo) under the baton of Emmanuelle Haïm and
La Bohème, both for the Opera National de Paris. Recently she obtained a great success in Parma with
Simon Boccanegra.
Future engagements include
Suor Angelica and Otello in Paris and
La Clemenza di Tito in Toulouse.
On the concert podium, she has performed Verdi’s Requiem with the LSO under Sir Colin Davis, the Accademia of Santa Cecilia and Antonio Pappano, the Bayerische Staatsoper under the baton of Mariss Jansons and most recently at the Grafenegg Festival with Gianandrea Noseda.
Tamar Iveri has been awarded the M. Abashidze National prize in Georgia.
