
Greta Hodgkinson was born in Providence, Rhode Island and attended the National Ballet School in Canada. She later joined the National Ballet in 1990, where she was nominated lead soloist dancer and then principal dancer following her debut in
Swan lake by Erik Bruhn.
She has performed in numerous roles which include Juliet in
Roméo et Juliette, Princess Aurora in
Sleeping beauty and Tatiana in
Onegin. Others are Caterina in
The Taming of the shrew, Lise in
La Fille mal gardée and the lead role in
Giselle and
L'Histoire de Manon. She also danced in
Sphynx by Glen Tetley and in
In the middle, somewhat elevated by William Forsythe, as well as in
Theme and variations,
Jewels and
Tchaikovsky pas de deux by Balanchine.
To the choreography of James Kudelka, she danced the part of Odette/Odile in
Swan lake by Tchaikovsky and the title role in
The Firebird. She was also the main dancer in other ballets with American choreography, among which were
Désir,
The Four seasons,
Terra firma and
Cruel world.
In 1993, she was awarded the "Erik Bruhn" prize and in 2000, she was nominated for the prestigious "Benois de la Danse" prize.
In November 2001, she appeared at the Teatro Filarmonico of Verona in the production "Stelle di oggi, stelle di domani". During her career, she has appeared as a guest artist in the United States, Europe and Australia.
