Born in Rumania in 1970, Doina Dimitriu graduated in piano (1989) and in singing (1995) at the Art College of Iassy. In 1996 she took part in the Master Class held by Mariana Nicolesco.
Winner of the Singing International Competition "Hariclea Darclée" in Braila (1997), Doina Dimitriu made her operatic debuts in the theatres of Bucarest, Iassy, Tamisoara and Cluj-Napoca. There, she sang in such operas as Don Giovanni, Idomeneo, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Faust, Carmen, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, La Bohème and Les Contes d'Hoffmann, as well as in Beethoven's Ninth's Symphony and Verdi's Messa da Requiem.
From 1999 to 2001, she was a student of the Accademia di Perfezionamento per Cantanti Lirici of the Teatro alla Scala. In 2000 she made her debut in La Cecchina, ossia la buona figliuola at the Teatro Fraschini di Pavia and at La Scala Opera in the role of Mimì in La Bohème (under the baton of Niksa Bareza).
From then on, Doina Dimitriu has enjoyed an on-going collaboration with the Teatro alla Scala. She performed in a concert conducted by Stefano Ranzani, was a soloist in Bruckner's Missa under the baton of Riccardo Muti with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, and experienced great success singing in the role of Marchesa del Poggio in Un giorno di regno staged by Pier Luigi Pizzi. She has also appeared as Leonora in Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio conducted by Nicola Luisotti, as Violetta in La Traviata and in Il Processo by Colla. In January 2001, she sang in a concert at the Palazzo Reale for the centenary of Verdi's death and, in February, at La Scala, she took part in the review "I giovani per Verdi".
In May 2001 she was the Second Prize winner at the International Competition "Voci Verdiane" in Busseto (PR). She subsequently made her debut in the role of Leonora in Il Trovatore with the Orchestra Toscanini di Parma at the Castello di Vigoleno (PR).
She sang at the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto in Macbeth (Lady Macbeth) to great acclaim from the public and critics alike. She also appeared in Verdi's Requiem in Parma conducted by Rostropovich.
She sang in Ugo Conte di Parigi at the Teatro alla Scala, in Tosca in Genoa and Tokyo (Suntory Hall) and in Verdi's Requiem in Parma and Reggio Calabria. She appeared in Simon Boccanegra for the opening of the season in Santa Fe, in Tosca in Stockolm and I Vespri siciliani for the opening of the season in Palermo. Future engagements include: Don Giovanni (Donna Elvira) in Genoa, I Vespri siciliani in Palermo and a new production of Il Trovatore in Toronto. Other future performances will be in La Forza del destino, in Madama Butterfly in Trieste and Tokyo, in Tosca at Opera Pacific, in a new production of Il Trittico in Toulouse and in I Vespri siciliani in Toulouse.
