American mezzo-soprano Tichina Vaughn began her operatic career as a member of the Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera after completing her studies at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She made her debut on the MET stage in Porgy and Bess and her European debut at the Stuttgart State Theater as Dame Quickly in Falstaff and as Venus in Tannhauser.
From 1998 till 2006 Tichina Vaughn was a celebrated member of the ensemble at the Stuttgart State Theater where the Cultural Ministry Baden-Württemberg awarded her the title of Kammersängerin. In Stuttgart she experienced great success in such roles as Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, Azucena in Il Trovatore, Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, Widow Begbick in Mahagony, Herodias in Salome, Fricka in Die Walküre, Waltraute in Die Götterdämmerung, and Erda in Siegfried and Das Rheingold. Other critically acclaimed role portrayals include Amneris in Aida and Klytemnestra in Elektra.
As a visiting artist she has been heard in some of the most important theaters worldwide. Among them, the San Francisco Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Seattle Opera, the Detroit Opera, the Finnish National Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera, Opera Graz, the Bregenz Festival, Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Teartro Carlo Felice Genova, the Rome National Opera, Teartro Verdi Ancona, the Arena di Verona, the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, as well as the National Theater of Las Palmas und the National Theater Hongkong.
In addition to her many operatic successes, Ms. Vaughn has performed in symphonic concerts, chamber concerts, and recitals in many prestigious concert halls around the world. Orchestras and conductors include the Chicago Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Philharmonic as well as Maestros James Levine, Nello Santi, Mislahv Rostropovich, Bobby McFerrin, Nicola Luisotti, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Oren, Fabio Luisi und Stefan Soltesz to name a few.
Recent role debuts have included Jezibaba in Rusalka, Isabella in L’Italiana in Algieri, Prince Orloffsky in Der Fledermaus at the Semper Opera Dresden where she is an ensemble member since the 2010-2011 season. Other roles in Dresden have included Venus in Tannhauser, Herodias in Salome and Azucena in Il Trovatore.
In Season 2011/12 Ms. Vaughn sang Verdi’s Requiem in Tel Aviv, and Amneris (Aida) at Arena di Verona she has been also Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera, Ortrud in Lohengrin sowie die Königin in Švanda dudák/Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer. She is now engaged in Athene with il Trovatore.
Her future plans include Porgy and Bess with the Berliner Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle, as well as Don Carlo in Frankfurt.
