Giovanni Meoni

Giovanni Meoni began his musical studies at an early age. He took piano and singing lessons, and ended his singing studies with Maestro Leo Ferri. From 1991 to 1993 he won many national and international awards.
He made his debut in 1991 as Marcello in La Bohème at Rieti's Teatro Vespasiano, and later, in 1993, he sang Nevers in Novara's new production of Les Huguenots, staged for the reopening of the theatre. After that, he sang in La Bohème as Schaunard at the theatres in Jesi and Lucca and La Traviata as Germont at the theatre in Casale Monferrato.

In 1994 he appeared as Marcello in La Bohème at Venice's Teatro La Fenice, as Moralés in Carmen at Macerata's Sferisterio, as Germont in La Traviata at theatres in Novara and Vercelli, as Belcore in L'Elisir d'amore at Turin's Teatro Regio, as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at Sassari's Teatro Verdi and as Germont in La Traviata at the theatre in S.Severo.

He began 1995 as Schaunard in La Bohème at Trieste's Teatro Verdi, then as Moralés in Carmen at Bologna's Teatro Comunale, as Germont in La Traviata at Savona's theatre and as Rodrigo in Don Carlo at Padua's Teatro Verdi.

In 1996 he made his debut as Kyoto in Iris at the Rome Opera and later he performed the same role with the Münchner Philarmoniker, under the baton of Maestro Gelmetti. Afterwards he sang as Germont in La Traviata at Piacenza's Teatro Municipale, as Schaunard in La Bohème for the summer season of Rome's Teatro dell'Opera, as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at Savona's theatre and as Silvio in I Pagliacci at the theatre in Ascoli Piceno.

In 1997 he made his debut as Carlo V in Ernani at Piacenza, then he sang the part of Nottingham in Roberto Devereux at Turin's Teatro Regio, as Germont in La Traviata at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at Macerata's Sferisterio, as Rambaldo in La Rondine with the Münchner Philarmoniker and Maestro Gelmetti, as Riccardo in I Puritani in Kaiserslautern, Donizetti's Messa da Requiem at Rome Opera and Valentin in Faust at Como's Teatro Sociale in the production of Macerata's Arena Sferisterio.

In 1998 he returned to Piacenza as Francesco in the new production of I Masnadieri, and at the Rome Opera, as Alphonse XI, for the new production of La Favorite, sung in the French version. Then in Amsterdam's "Concertgebouw" he was Rodolfo in Leocavallo's La Bohème and afterwards in Carnegie Hall of New York he was very successful when he sang the part of Severo in Donizetti's Poliuto. He came back to Amsterdam's "Concertgebouw" as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with the Vara Radio Orchestra and in Turin's Teatro Regio as Kyoto in Iris.

In 1999 he interpreted the part of Enrico di Chevreuse in Donizetti's Maria di Rohan in Venice under Maestro Gelmetti, and made his debut in Naples as Robert in Tchaikovsky's Yolanta. In Antwerp and Gent he appeared as Carlo V in Ernani for the celebrations of 500 years after the birth of Emperor Charles V.

The year 2000 began with the inauguration of Palermo's Teatro Massimo where he performed the part of Valentin in Faust, in Marseille's Opera House he was Germont in La Traviata and he returned to Palermo as Marcello in La Bohème. In the summer of 2000 he sang again as Marcello in La Bohème at Teatro Sferisterio in Macerata.

In January 2001 he went back to France to the Montpellier Opera House where he was Germont in Verdi's La Traviata and again in the Teatro San Carlo in Naples he was successful in the role of Rodrigo in Verdi's Don Carlo. In the summer he performed in various concerts for Verdi's centennial, the most important being at the National Theatre of Kiev in the Ukraine and in Japan at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space for the occasion of the 17th Tokyo Summer Festival 2001, where he obtained remarkable reviews. In October he was engaged as Rodrigue in Verdi's Don Carlos (French version), at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and afterwards as Germont in Verdi's La Traviata at Savona's Teatro dell'Opera Giocosa.

During the period March-June 2002 he performed in several successful concerts, on tour with the Arena di Verona Foundation, in New York, London, Madrid, Hong Kong and Macao. In April he played the part of Riccardo in Bellini's I Puritani in a new production at the Wielki Theatre in Lódz, Poland. This was followed by his interpretation of Carlo V in Verdi's Ernani at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples which received great reviews. His recent participation as Sharpless in Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Hamburgische Staatsoper was very important and this was followed by his debut in Aida (Amonasro) at the Arena di Verona, conducted by Maestro Daniel Oren and directed by Franco Zeffirelli.

In October he gave a concert in Paris with the Arena di Verona Foundation and in November he inaugurated the 2002/2003 opera season in the Teatro Filarmonico, Verona, where he performed the role of Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera by Giuseppe Verdi. He was very successful with the public and received great reviews from the critics.

In January 2003 he sang the role of Amonasro in Aida at Rome's Teatro Argentina, in the production by the Toscanini Foundation of Parma, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Then he returned to Bologna's Teatro Comunale where he obtained remarkable success, once again, as Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by Maestro Daniele Gatti. His participation at the Bayerische Staatsoper as Amonasro in Aida followed by Verdi's Simon Boccanegra at Teatro San Carlo in Naples, directed by Maestro Gary Bertini, are important moments in the baritone's career
