Salvatore Licitra is one of the leading tenors in the beautiful and highly sought-after dramatic Italian repertoire. A frequent guest at major opera and concert stages in Europe, the United States and the Far East as for exemple Vienna State Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro alla Scala, London’s Royal Opera, Paris Opera Bastille, Staatsoper Berlin, the opera companies of Rome, Florence, Parma, Naples, Lisbon, Oslo, Turin as well as to the New York Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, San Francisco and Los Angeles Opera. His repertory includes AIDA, UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, ERNANI, MACBETH, DON CARLOS, IL TROVATORE, TOSCA, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, IL TABARRO, NORMA, ADRIANA LECOUVREUR, ANDREA CHENIER, PAGLIACCI and CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA.
Born in Bern (Switzerland), he studied in Parma where in 1998 he made his debut at the Teatro Regio in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA. He garnered international attention later that year when he unexpectedly inaugurated the 1998 Arena di Verona, again UN BALLO IN MASCHERA. The following year Maestro Riccardo Muti brought him to La Scala for a new production of LA FORZA DEL DESTINO.
At Wiener Staatsoper we remember his performances of NORMA, TOSCA, ANDREA CHENIER, AIDA and recently a new production of LA FORZA DEL DESTINO. He sang ERNANI at the Deutsch Oper in Berlin, DON CARLOS in Los Angeles and TOSCA at the Royal Opera House in London; TOSCA, AIDA, LA FORZA DEL DESTINO and UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Metropolitan Opera in New York where he also made his debut with IL TABARRO and PAGLIACCI.
Recently he sang TURANDOT at the Arena di Verona and celebrated AIDA performances with the Teatro alla Scala on tour in Buenos Aires conducted by Daniel Barenboim. In September, Salvatore Licitra takes on the role of Riccardo in the season opening production of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Washington National Opera.
Highlights of the 2010-2011 season include the season opening production of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Washington National Opera, CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA at Teatro Alla Scala and his role debut as Don José in Bizet’s CARMEN at the San Diego Opera. LA FORZA DEL DESTINO in Florence, LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST at Teatro Massimo in Palermo, ANDREA CHENIER at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, ERNANI and TURANDOT at the Metropolitan Opera, TOSCA and MANON LESCAUT in Hamburg.
His discography includes IL TROVATORE and TOSCA (both conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti), two solo albums of Verdi, Puccini and verismo arias and the soundtrack of “The Man Who Cried”. He can be seen on DVD on the Opernhaus Zurich released of their AIDA production as well as La Scala’s TOSCA conducted by Riccardo Muti.
